George of Springfield asks,
My a/c system will not lower temp less than 15 degrees of outside temp inside home. Attic is extremely hot. Will attic power ventilation and reinsulating duct in attic help?
The Handyman replies,
Attic Fan is a great idea. If your attic is that hot insulation must be working
Cathy of Springfield asks,
I want a flag pole put on the front of my house which would require drilling into brick. Do you know anyone who can do this and not charge an arm and a leg as I am on disability. It was help up with a cement putty and that lasted 3 years now it will not hold with that. Thanks.
The Handyman replies,
Yes Give me a Call
John of Springfield asks,
Me and my dad just installed a sucurity light for our back door and some how the light switch keeps kicking the breaker off from our kitchen breaker. The light switch is powered by 3 outlets connected to power box.
The Handyman replies,
You probably have too much on that breaker . Check see if your refrigerator is on it ! If so you will have to try to get something off that line .
Letitia of Springfield asks,
I replaced the bathtub/shower faucets in the bathroom; however, now the water trickles out of the bath faucet and the shower head. when the faucet is removed from the tub the water flows effortlessly.
The Handyman replies,
You might have a shout off that will not turn off all the way . While you have it off open the shout off for 2 to3 seconds then try it.
Pat of Springfield asks,
My son's house in Northridge has two basement walls with verticle cracks running from the floor to about half way up the walls. We have tried fixing them but with the recent rains, both have water coming thrugh them. Do you know of any one that can look at them to advise us on how to fix the problem?
The Handyman replies,
You might have to put a gravel drains a round your house . It will pull the water away. Then use water stop cement to fill the holes.
Kelly of Springfield asks,
Hello, the lights in my house sometimes dim. Is this a power surge or a bad breaker? My house is about 60 years old that had a fuse box that we had changed to breakers but the wiring is still original. They dim for about 30-45 seconds then brighten back up. Thanks, Kelly
The Handyman replies,
It could be a bad breaker. Is it the whole house that dims our one circuit. John
Dave of Springfield asks,
My basement needs waterproofing. I was told that I could do just as good a job myself with waterproofing paint as if I called pro. What do you think?
The Handyman replies,
Yes You Can . If you use the right item. UGL. But you must wire brush any paint on the walls at this time . Basement paint goes on thick. If you have running water coming throuth the wall Get with me.
John
David of Springfield asks,
I have two questions: What is the standard height for a chair rail in a room. I want to white wash panelling , do I just add water to the paint, or do I lightly wipe the paint off with a wet rag or sponge? Thank you, handy-man.
The Handyman replies,
Most chair rail is 32" high that way if your using paneling you get three pieces. Know on the paint you might have to prime the panneling. or clean it with TSP. then paint and wipe or use rags to put on. John
Doug of Springfield asks,
I thought I'd save money by putting in the largest storm door I could in place of a custom size door. which left me 3 inches short on the bottom. Is there a sweep or extension I can get to fill in the gap?
The Handyman replies,
Yes you can get a vinyl sweep, but I would put a top board in and lower the door
David Glover of Springfield asks,
I have a yellow formica bathroom counter. I would like to paint it blue. Can this be done and will I have to prep the formica with some kind of base application and what type of paint would I purchase? (RE: the shelf, thank you for your advice, it worked perfectly)
The Handyman replies
Yes David you will have to prep it. You can also use a very fine sand paper first then prep and paint, use a latex enamel gloss may be two coats.
David Glover of Springfield asks,
How can I hang a 6 foot shelf on a wall that is panneled without it coming from the wall and tearing holes?
The Handyman replies
Hi David! It Sounds like you might have a Mobile home . Well there should be a 2 x 2 every 16" or 24' on center . But if not they make a screw in anchor for paneled wall ,there called zip it or wallboard anchors.
Bill Conroy asks,
how can I tighten the joints in my wooden dining room chairs? they have padded seats
The Handyman replies
If it is just the joints in the spindles. I have a glue that activates the old glue . If it is the seat ,we will have to turn it over. and work on the bottom with some glue and clamps . Thank You ,I hope this Helps.
