Fulton Elementary Celebrates Million-Word Readers

On Monday, May 12, 2008, Fulton celebrated the achievement of students who have read 1,000,000 words or more during their 1,000,000 Word celebration. They celebrated in style by greeting them with limo rides, dancing, North High School Band playing. They participated in relay races, water balloon fights, dancing, face painting and a whole slew of give-a-ways.

According to Sherry Cross, Principal of Fulton Elementary School, the Million Word contest is designed to promote literacy, and to show kids that reading can be fun. The contest ran all school year, and about 100 students achieved the million word mark. A million words translates to 25-30 chapter books.

The 1,000,000 Word contest is an annual occurence at Fulton, so those who did not win this year have another chance next year.

Limousines were provided by several area funeral homes: Jackson, Lytle & Williams, Littleton and Rue, Robert C. Henry and Porter-Qualls. Prizes were provided by several area merchants.
