Ana L. Varner

Ana L. (Ann) Varner, age 88 of South Charleston, passed away December 5, 2009 at home in the loving care of family and with the compassionate/wonderful help of staff of Community Mercy Hospice. Ann was born on April 17,1921 to Irene Love and John J. Urby, but for years, with the remarriage of her mother to Paul W. Smith, was raised and loved by his guiding hands. She drove a TNT/Sulfuric Acid "Big Rig Truck" on the military compound at Point Pleasant during WWII where she met her husband Ray Varner, who was a gate guard. They landed in Clarksburg, West Virginia, where they raised four children, lost one son, Gary Glen who left this world one day after birth. She lost her husband after 35 years of marriage. Ann returned to South Charleston, Ohio where she became an employee of Shoemakers Grocery Store from 1973-1996. She always had a smile and a quip or joke for everyone; that is where she earned the nickname "Attitude Annie". She was very active in ceramics, square dancing, bowling, traveling and was known and loved by all.

Survivors include her children, Rae Ann Varner Geake (Tom) South Charleston, Nancy L. Secreto (Jimmy) Charlotte, N.C., Bob W. Varner (Gail) South Charleston, Jon A. Varner (Mendi) Springfield, Oh., One close sister Sue Call (Harold) South Charleston / Melbourne Beach, Fl. One sister-in-law Jo Cassidy (Jack Ubry); South Charleston, and many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and nieces and nephews.

Ann was predeceased by her parents, husband, infant son, one grandson (Andy Smyth Detty at 24 yrs), two brothers Gene & Jack Ubry and sister-in-law Helen Ubry (Mrs. Gene Ubry).She was a member of and attended Grape Grove Church of Christ, Jamestown, Ohio.

A gathering of family & friends will be held from 5-8 p.m., Tuesday in the INGLING-WILLIAMS FUNERAL HOME, 24 N. Chillicothe St., South Charleston, where services will be conducted at 10:00 a.m., Wednesday., with preacher William J. Lott officiating.

Interment will be in Clarksburg, West Va., in the family plot at the Masonic Cemetery in Eastview.
