Ask the Mayor

Your Government in Action

December 29, 2006

Deanna Mundy of Springfield asks,
"I have a few questions regarding the Red Light Cameras recently installed around Springfield.

1. Why were the cameras installed?

2. Where does the money that is generated from people receiving tickets go?

3. Do you approve of this new ticketing system?

4. Is there any chance of getting these cameras removed?"

Mayor Copeland replies,
"1. The red light cameras were put in to reduce the number of people running red lights.

2. The money the City gets goes into our general fund. About two thirds of that fund is spent on police, fire, EMS and Municipal Court.

3. I voted for the lights with reservations. If they do not reduce the running of red lights, I would be opposed to them.

4. The City Commission or the Ohio General Assembly could vote to eliminate them.

Warren Copeland"
