Ask the Mayor

Your Government in Action

November 15, 2006

Ted Rastatter of Springfield asks,
"Is there a formal committee of some sort that is actively involved in bringing new business to Springfield? "

Mayor Copeland replies,
"The City itself has both a team approach and has an economic development director. Various staff works with particular prospects. However, Tom Franzen (in the City Manager's Office) is specifically assigned more or less full time to economic development. He both seeks prospects and works with those who have been identified. The City is also involved in retention and expansion visits with companies already located in Springfield in order to try to keep them here and help them expand here.

The City also participates in the Community Improvement Corporation which is the economic development arm of the Chamber of Commerce. Two City commissioners (and two County Commissioners) serve on that board, and City Staff works with their staff.

Finally, the Turner Foundation also does some economic development work, especially related to downtown development and the Next Edge information technology park.

If the system works well, all of these efforts are coordinated with each other.

Warren Copeland"
