Ask the Mayor

Your Government in Action

September 24, 2006

Chris Johnson of Springfield asks,
"Mr. Mayor,
Why does the fire department charge $583.00 when someone calls 911 for an auto accident, when their services were not needed and there was never a service performed once they arrived. This type of accident, amongst several others, do NOT require several on-looking fire fighters, especially at the rate which they are charging insurance companies and Springfield citizens. WE the citizens of Springfield incure these costs even though we are also paying the fire fighters salaries as well as all costs associated with their vehicles, buldings, training etc. Insurance companies are starting to not pay these fire department bills if their services were not utilized, which places a $583.00 burden on the driver who caused the accident. On top of the stress have the stress for paying for a service that was never requested, needed, or used.

Mayor Copeland replies,
"It is my understanding that citizens of Springfield do not have to pay for these services!

Do you want me to contact the Fire Chief about a particular charge? Give me the specifics, and I will be happy to do so.

Warren Copeland
