John Adams of Springfield asks,

"When I'm downtown I notice homeless people sleeping on the benches around the city square plaza. Is there a way to put bars on the benches like they did in Columbus to prevent homeless people from sleeping there?"

Mayor Copeland replies,

"The City did not finance and was not involved in selecting the elements of the downtown streetscape program such as the granite curbs, the benches, the planters, etc. So I checked with Jennie Baader of the Center City Association. Neither of us are familiar with the Columbus situtation, but she said that our benches are cast as they are and are not changeable.
