Ask the Mayor

Your Government in Action

July 5, 2007

Cindy Funk of Springfield asks,
" With the traffic burden that ocurrs in front of the main post office, and cars constantly trying to cross from the parking area to the far left lane to turn west on North Street, why can't that center lane be marked for straight and/or left turn? There would be two lanes of traffic able to turn west, and two going straight, with the center lane giving the driver a choice. I have seen other intersections that work like this, and it works well."

Mayor Copeland replies,
"The City Engineer has responded to your question that the corner does not have enough people turning left to justify a dual left turn lane according to traffic engineering standards. He also says that the traffic signal would have to be set up completely differently to run this type of dual turn lane. I recognize the difficulties with that corner. Eliminating the mail boxes on the street has helped traffic flow, but I agree that it remains something of a problem.

Warren Copeland"
