Ask the Mayor

Your Government in Action

June 25, 2007

Andrea of Springfield asks,
" I live near Horace Mann Elementary School, and oftern take my young children there to play. They enjoy the surroundings a lot. However, as they have not learned to read yet, I am thankful. The reason being is the grafiti. There have been some very distasteful markings. This includes words and symbols that are vulgar. Last year, I pressed and pressed to the school that this is unacceptable and that it should be their responsiblity to either remove or cover it up. After several months of complaining, it was finally taken care of. My question is this, why should it have taken so long before something is done? If the schools are accesible to the public, shouldn't they have the upmost keep. And at that, this is an elementary school...appalling. I know that it is near impossible to stop the grafiti from going up, but what values and messages are being sent to our youth that no one cares enough to remove it with out continual nagging. Our schools should come first, and if we show that maybe we would get the funding needed. I am sure that a few cans of paint to remove the markings is cheaper to buy than a new swing set."

Mayor Copeland replies,
"I share your concern! Have you told the Board of Education your story? I am involved in getting a new effort started in Springfield to address this kind of thing. In the meantime, Juvenile Court and the Sheriff have crews that can help. If you talk to Board of Education members you might mention that. I will also let the school officials know when I get a chance.

Warren Copeland"
